The ring gear has teeth which engage with the starter motor allowing the engine to crank over and start. Most 1965-1968 Mustangs received the smaller 157 Tooth Flywheels and Flexplates, but some Mustangs came from the factory with the 164 Tooth setup which has a larger diameter and uses a completely different bellhousing. These 164 Tooth versions were used on all Broncos, starting in 1966, and became standard on Mustangs with a 351 Windsor in 1969. These were also used on 351 Cleveland cars starting in 1970.
