These conversion kits are direct bolt-in applications using the stock mounting location and pitman arm. These fit 67 Mustangs that currently have manual steering and a 289, 302 or 351W V-8 engine. These will NOT clear the exhaust manifolds or Headers on a Big Block 390 or 428, so Small Block Ford only! Ford changed the steering system midway through the 1967 production run so there are "Early" and "Late" 67 Mustang steering layouts (actually, there is a short-lived mutant setup using the old 1" sector shaft and a rag joint....but we don't talk about that one....Area 51 kind of stuff....don't ask). Early 67 Mustangs have the steering column shaft connected directly into the steering box like they did on 65-66 Mustangs so you have to pull the steering column apart to take the steering box out. Midway through 1967, Ford had the genius idea to separate the Steering Box from the Steering Shaft going into the column but putting a rubberized cotton (yes cotton) removable U-joint between the 2 parts. This weird U-joint is known as a "Rag Joint" due to its cotton material. Ford also decided at that time to make the shaft coming out of the steering box a little thicker so those early cars have a 1" diameter sector shaft, while the later "Rag Joint" cars have a 1-1/8" diameter sector shaft. When Ford went to this new 1-1/8" Sector shaft, it meant that the Pitman Arm that attaches at the bottom of the steering box went from 1 inch to 1-1/8 inch. Regardless of which steering type is in your car now, this kit will have you take the steering box and the steering shaft that is in you column out and replace it with their brand new steering shaft, their rag joint and their hydraulic steering box. You will then re-use your old Pitman Arm, so the only difference between the 2 kits is the diameter of your existing Pitman Arm. The Early version will re-use your existing 1" Pitman Arm, while the Late version will re-use your existing 1-1/8" Pitman Arm. If you have one of those Freaky Mutant 67 Mustangs that have a Rag Joint AND the smaller 1" Sector Shaft, then you were just unlucky and your existing Pitman Arm will NOT fit and you'll have to buy a new 1-1/8" Pitman Arm.
